How To Make A DIY Solar Panel Of 6 Volts

Tools and Parts List:

  • 1. Solar Cells
  • 2. Tab Wire
  • 3. Bus Wire
  • 4. Flux Pen
  • 5. Soldering Iron (350 Degrees C)
  • 6. Back Plane
  • 7. PV Junction Box
  • 8. Photo Voltaic Sealant
  • 9. Diode
  • 10. Heat Resistant PV Tape (Optional)

Step 1

Activate your flux pen, by pressing down firmly on the tip. Flux should begin to flow… Apply flux along the negative electrode of the solar cell.

Step 2

Place tab wire over the electrode that flux has been applied to.

Step 3

Use a horse shoe - shaped electric soldering iron to solder the tab wire to the solar cell, starting from the the top to the bottom. Make sure the welding tip is at a temperature of 350 degrees celsius or more…

Step 4

Follow the steps above, to solder 12 pieces of the solar cells.

Step 5

After soldering the 12 solar cells, divide them into 2 groups (A and B). The solar cells are connected in series. Turn the solar cells to the positive soldering surface.

Connect the negative electrode of the first piece, to the positive electrode of the second piece. Solder the 6 solar cells in order… A positive connection wire, is soldered at the positive end of the last solar cell, which is used to solder group A to Group B.

Step 6

Turn over to the front of the solar cell and place the positive and negative terminals on one side of the A and B groups in one direction, to be soldered in series. Select bus wire of the appropriate length and solder the negative and positive wires, at one end of the A and B groups. On the other side, bus wire is soldered to the 2 positive and 2 negative electrodes.

The last 2 lead wires, are the positive and negative terminals of the solar panel.

Step 7

Drill 2 suitable holes in the back plate and pull the negative and positive terminals through the holes.

Step 8

Connect the diode in series with the positive terminal of the solar panel. After connecting the cable on the solar panel, fix the junction box on the back of the panel with sealant. Choose suitable sealing and water proof material, for the front of the solar panel, such as glass and highly transparent resin etc… At this point, the soldering of the solar panel is complete.
